Hello everyone and thank you, Karen Serenity. I'm happy to allow myself to be added to your Positive Thinking TS Women webpages, which (by the way) are indeed inspiring.

I am a high school English teacher who transitioned on the job. I believe that I am the first in the United States to do so. In 1997, after fifteen years at the same school in an affluent and conservative Chicago suburb, I transitioned. I'm celebrating my quarter-century at the school in 2007 and having a blast.

There were trials and tribulations of course, some of which (the ones involving my birth family especially) remain unresolved, but the most important areas of my life have settled nicely. I married a wonderful man in 2007, my children and I have wonderful relationships, and nothing in my past has caused any loss of respect from my students. I'm even the council chair at my church.

Although I transitioned very publicly (the press had a field day--they considered it "news"), I managed to stay pretty stealth outside of work for years. In the last couple of years though, I've decided that there is no reason to hide. I came out at church and in all aspects of my life.

I led the drive to have my church become a "welcoming congregation." I even allowed myself to be interviewed by and pictured in Newsweek's gender article in 2007. I believe that the world has to see more positive examples of transsexual people.

I'll be adding some TS information to my personal website when I have time to do so.

From my earliest childhood, there has always been the knowledge that I was a woman. Of course, I had no idea that gender identity disorder existed or what it was; all I knew was that something was terribly, terribly wrong.

I was born and reared in a very small town in Kansas during the 1950's and 1960's. Being an ultraconservative era and area, it quickly became apparent that my feelings that I was a girl were NOT acceptable. My earliest school friends were girls until peer pressure and teacher and parent disapproval made me eventually develop male friends. There were occasional news stories about people like Christine Jorgensen, but that seemed like such another world. I read them with a fascination that I couldn't understand.

In grade school and high school, I excelled in vocal and instrumental music, debate and speech, and English. I hated science. I tried to play sports, which I detested. I had a steady girlfriend and became fairly popular. But no one knew that I cross-dressed in secret, was depressed, and full of self-hatred, because I had to hide who I really was.

My grandparents introduced me to the love of horses. They became my passion, a love that endures still today. I spent hours and hours at the barn, working, riding, and just hanging out. This part of my life became my refuge from the "real world". With the horses, I could just be myself.

The years after high school consisted of more and more attempts to find things, jobs, hobbies, and people to make me feel happy. I graduated from college with honors, went to medical school, did an internship and a residency. I married and had four fantastic children. Marriage was a way I could vicariously live the life of a woman, and it was another way to try to convince myself and the world that I was a man. It's easy to hope that the love of a wonderful woman will cure your problems.

I told my wife that I had a strong feminine side, but could not bring myself to admit any more. During all of this, I remained lonely, withdrawn, depressed, and unhappy. I cross-dressed with increasing frequency, though after each session, it would result in even more depression and self-loathing. I would look at myself in the mirror and couldn't image how that person could EVER be viewed as a woman.

Eventually, the gender identity disorder became stronger and stronger. I woke up with it hitting me in the face. Again I tried to repress it, deny it, ignore it and pretend it didn't exist. I became seriously suicidal. My marriage was in trouble because I had withdrawn into my pain and inner turmoil so much that there was no way that I could maintain any relationship.

Finally, I began researching the internet. I found a forum that was very informative and supportive. It suddenly became clear that there were such things as gender counselors, facial feminization surgery, electrolysis, tracheal shaving, etc, and that transition was possible. I met some wonderful women who became my mentors. I found a counselor experienced with gender issues, and secretly began counseling.

It was quickly confirmed that I was transgendered, and I began to learn how to deal and accept. A few months thereafter, my wife and I began marriage counseling with a family therapist. Of course there was no progress because I had an enormous secret I was keeping from everyone. Finally, during one session, my secret burst out.

My wife and the counselor were totally blindsided. At first I tried to just accept my inner self and continue to live as before. But it quickly became apparent that I either had to transition or I didn't want to live. Period. I could not accept anything else.

My marriage ended. I began hormone replacement therapy, electrolysis, and had facial feminization surgery. I came out to my family and friends, my workplace, and began living fulltime as Laura. I had a legal name change, and after my real life test, had genital reassignment surgery.

I am now emotionally, legally, and anatomically a woman. My depression is gone. I live my life in relative stealth and rarely ever tell anyone my past. Most of my friends have accepted me. My kids and grandkids consistently tell me they like Laura much better than they ever did "him", because Laura is happy, upbeat, fun, and loves so deeply.

My sense of self-esteem has sky-rocketed. I have more and closer friends than at any other time in my life. I have an inner sense of peace and wholeness that I've never, ever, ever had before. I'm actively dating, and know that my new soulmate is just around the corner.

Sincere thanks to Dr. Laura, living in mainstreamed-stealth and seeking a loving husband, for most graciously agreeing to publish her motivational life story on this positive thinking women website. We express gratitude to Laura for her volunteering spirit to assist others who may be searching for their own special inner truth and peace of mind.
