"Ar"lene is a one-of-a-kind person in that she's a Professional in her chosen field of Electrology, and many of it's related Professional Cosmetic Services.  And yes, there is one other important item!  She is a Post-Op Transsexual, having had her G/SRS in 1975.  This Trans-Woman was born in Chicago, Illinois, and had Sex Reassignment Surgery by Edwin Marcus, M.D., who in those days, practiced in Beverly Hills and was an outside Consultant/Urologist surgeon at the Kaiser Hospital in Hollywood, California.

What makes "Ar"lene different, is that she is a well qualified Electrologist, the first known Post-Op to be Licensed as an Electrologist in the U.S.A., probably the World.  She has many Years of study in her background.  In 1977 she got her license to practice in the the Electrology field.  On November 22, 1976, while "Ar"lene was attending school, a NewsWeek Magazine article including pictures of her, were published.  "Ar"lene's parents took her transition well.  She was also, at the time, facilitating with a Transsexual Rap Group in Los Angeles and working with the Gay Community Service Center (now known as the LGBT), as a peer-counselor.

She also worked with the Tournament of Roses Parade with their group tours and parade participants in and around Pasadena and Los Angeles area.

The Story of My Maid of Honor, Christine Konda.

 by Mrs. "Ar"lene D. Lafferty

Chatting with Marvin on the phone a Lawyer who at the time I had not met, oh boy, who I will be seeing plenty of times later in the future. He had me give a telephone call to a lady who I would know later as Christine Konda.

Christine had an office that helped special people like me. This was an office that helped Transsexuals in the community. This term was used generally before the Transgender term was used. This was in October, 1975 - a few months after my sexual reassignment surgery (SRS).

I visited Christine in her office with her business partner Stephanie, both Transsexuals. Christine has been a post-op a bit longer than me, her SRS was in Morroco. Stephanie was pre-op.

Christine told me about a man who she cared for, who died and left her with money that his relatives contested. Later, she received some of it. Christine bought her condo with that money and also utilized some of the funds for her sexual reassignment surgery.

Christine Konda (1946-1989)

Christine and I chatted about things in common and our love for men. Christine came to my Halloween party I had a few days later with a boyfriend. Our friendship hit off. She called me the next day and told me that she had fun. Christine and I started going to Night Clubs to go man hunting. We had such great times going dancing and picking up cute men. Christine you see, was a absolute knockout, a gorgeous beauty.

Christine became my best friend after an incident at a small party in an apartment with these two cute minor league ball players, whom one of them got jealous and wanted to destroy her expensive coat. I stepped in and stopped it and got her coat back.

Christine helped me decide to go forth with my plans for marriage to Bob, back in February, 1976. I made Christine my Maid of Honor at my wedding to Bob. My wedding took place in Burbank, California. After that Chris and I stayed close friends, like sisters.

A few years went by, I got involved with a Transsexual Rap Group in Los Angeles, California as their facilitator. Christine visited the group and she worked with me on the Southern California Gender Identity Group as well. She, Jude Patton and I (“Ar”lene) were asked to CSUN (California State University Northridge) to talk and video tape for the students there. I would love to have that video tape.

In 1977, I became an licensed electrologist. Christine got into the drug scene, but we still held our friendship as sisters. I could not stop her.

In 1980, my husband Bob and I legally divorced. Christine Konda moved away to Tucson, Arizona.

Arlene Lafferty at Christine Konda's grave.

Loss of friendship through time: On February 8, 1989 at Christine’s Tucson, Arizona home - a man name Oscar Gonzales Medina worked his way into Christine Konda's home. Made so many advances that Christine pushed him away. Christine turned around to call the police and this man took the alabaster lamp, smashed it on the back of her head, knocking her down. He then took a knife and stabbed Christine Konda 19 times in the heart.

Christine did not die immediately. He then went outside to get a boulder and he smashed the back of her head in. She turned over and he smashed her skull and face in. Christine was bigger than Mr. Medina. The same night that the tragic event happened, Christine's brother's lover David, reported that Ms. Konda called her brother Joe at his home in San Francisco, California leaving the message..."I just wanted to tell you I love you."

Oscar Gonzales Medina drove off in Ms. Konda's car. He was later caught by police in the same car.

Christine (Talaco) Konda, was born December 11, 1946 in Brooklyn, New York. She died February 8, 1989 in Tucson, Arizona. She is buried at Holy Hope Cemetery in Tucson, Arizona.

Footnote: Oscar Gonzales Medina, death sentence was changed to life and now may be changed to parole due to what I believe could be the Transsexual factor.

Jennifer Leitham

Jazzy lady plays, sings, shares her blissful talents.

Jennifer Jane Leitham has been referred to by noted jazz critic Leonard Feather as the "left-handed virtuoso of the upright bass." In addition to her successful performance career, Jennifer has appeared on over 100 recordings with some of the giants of jazz music. In addition, she has recorded 5 highly acclaimed CDs of her own.

In 1987, after recording the Grammy nominated A Vintage Year with George Shearing and Mel Tormé, Jennifer began her long association with Mel that continued right up to the time of Mel's unfortunate stroke in August of 1996. Some of the highlights of Jennifer's tenure with Mel included recording 10 CDs for Mel, playing nine performances at Carnegie Hall, nine performances at The Hollywood Bowl, numerous television appearances, and performing with almost every major symphony in North America.

In addition to Mel, Jennifer has worked with many distinguished artists including Woody Herman, Gerry Mulligan, Peggy Lee, Joe Pass, Cleo Laine, Louis Bellson, Pete Rugolo, Bill Watrous, and numerous others. She has also been a member of the Tonight Show All-Stars, The Woody Herman Thundering Herd, Benny Carter Quintet, Bob Cooper Quartet, and more. Jennifer recently concluded her decade+ of touring with Doc Severinsen, performing with major symphony orchestras and his Big Band.

Jennifer has been invited to perform as a featured artist or group member at almost every major jazz festival in North America and many overseas. She is also enthusiastically received as a presenter at workshops and clinics around the country, including the International Society of Bassists convention this past year.

Jennifer's own highly regarded CD's include Leitham Up, The Southpaw, Lefty Leaps In, Live ! , and most recently, Two for the Road, a duo performance with guitar virtuoso Jimmy Bruno.

Words of high praise for Jennifer Jane Leitham and these recordings come from many of today's jazz critics and publications :
"prodigious technique and improvisatory prowess promptly erase any emotion except awe." [J. Robert Bragonier-52nd St. Jazz].

"As an improviser, Leitham has few peers." [Bill Kolhaase-LA Times]

"a unique level.......to effortlessly improvise with imagination, incredible skill and even a bit of humor." [Jim Ferguson, Jazz Times]

"swinging high-energy performances and remarkable technique....."
[John T. Bitter-musicHound Jazz]

Performing on her Paesold bass, Jennifer is an artist/clinician for The Music Group. She endorses the Hofner electric bass and Paesold upright basses. Jennifer has said: "What makes the Hofner Beatle Bass different from other electric basses is its acoustic characteristics. It actually moves air similar to a string bass. It's a living, breathing musical instrument." About her Paesold upright bass she comments, "It carries enough bottom to play in an orchestra yet it still punches out pizzicato solos like a great jazz instrument."

Jennifer Leitham is a smart, ingenious woman and eminently skilled, talented musician.   Her impressive confidence, professional poise and easy style has won the wide praise and acclaim of her professional peers.  Having appeared in the documentary "Sex Change"(on TLC), her transition was notably public.  She remains proudly open about sharing her enlightening story and feels "we need a healthy, respectable dialog that all can understand."   Jennifer Leitham presents as an intelligent, attractive, naturally assured female.  Her victorious life transition is a powerfully inspiring example of remarkably courageous "out-of-stealth" living.  - Mrs. KAREN SERENITY

For decades, the Mahuwahine have been sex workers in Hawaii.

32 years ago, when I transitioned in Hawaii, there were no services or support organizations for the Mahuwahine (male-to-females). I came from an upper-middle class family of social standing and brought shame upon them. So, at 21 I left and became a sex worker. More often than not, the sex industry was the only road available to trans girls back then. In the 1960s and early 70's it was against the law to cross-dress, so the "T" girls were forced to wear buttons that read "I Am A Boy," and were only allowed to work in a four block radius in downtown Honolulu. If you were caught without a button you were beaten by the cops and thrown in jail. This is how it was, no one cared about us.

The Glades Project

Aunty Anita

At age 25, after my SRS, I started presenting myself as a biological woman; no one knew about my past history. I had no marketable skills so I made money performing in burlesque, working around the country and overseas as a Vegas headliner. It was fun dressing-up every night and being glamorous I was a diva but I dreamed of a different life for myself. I wanted to be married and live as a straight woman, but I didn't know how to make that happen and I didn't believe I had any skills to pull myself out of the adult industry. I met a man, when I was stripping, who worshipped the ground I walked on. When he asked me to marry him I decided not to tell him I was trans. At the time I thought I was making the right decision, and I would take my secret to the grave. I carried that burden for 17 years.

Aunty Anita and her loving Husband on their special Wedding Day in 1990.

Each stage of my life has been about lessons learned. In 2005, I decided to come out to my husband and I'm fortunate that he loves me unconditionally and supports the confidant woman I am today. I'm in a stage of my life now where it isn't all about me anymore I want to help others.

My new quest is to educate, as few working girls are strong enough to get past a life filled with substance abuse, beatings, and possibly contracting HIV. I was lucky I came out of it alive. My dreams have come true and I try to teach the girls that they don't have to be on the streets to use their brains and get an education. Those sisters who were beaten by the cops, had beer bottles thrown at them, and were murdered they paved the road that we walk on now. We can all have a better life today. With the spirit of my sister mahuwahines speaking through me, I am now here to help and I'm not hiding anymore.

Ha`a he`o I ka nani mahuwahine e` mahulani - (The beauty of pride is to share with you, brothers and sisters).

Happy CHINESE NEW YEAR to all every January 29th! - Aunty Anita, 53

Aunty Anita is a very special lady deserving of much happiness.  Transitioning in the dark, unenlightened era of the early 1970's, Anita successfully overcame incredibly difficult challenges to live the optimistic life she enjoys and shares today.  Her current altruistic avocation of education is providing welcomed assistance to many non-profit transgender groups in the San Francisco Bay area.  - Mrs. KAREN SERENITY

Aejaie Sellers

Aejaie Sellers  San Jose, California Map

Photo: Troy May

Copyright © 2008 Aejaie Sellers, Bay Area Reporter, Karen Serenity, KarenSerenity.com Positive Thinking Transsexual Women. All rights reserved.

New York State born & raised world-shaker.

Aejaie Sellers, the new executive director of the Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center in San Jose, said her transition from male to female was not typical in that she had the full support of her family.

At age 14, Sellers told her parents she wanted to be female. Her parents already knew.

When she was 5, Sellers wrote a letter to Santa Claus, telling him she wanted to be a little girl. She didn't know at the time her parents were Santa Claus. "Looking back, that was a dead giveaway," Sellers said.

At the age of 17, with the support of her parents, she started her transition to be a biological female. "My experience wasn't typical," she said. "My father's health insurance paid for the surgery. I was their child and they loved me."

In 1981, within a year after starting her transition, she had reconstructive surgery and moved on with her life.

Sellers, 41, has one younger brother who is in the United States military, fighting in Iraq. Growing up in Saratoga Springs, New York, she had support from her entire family during her transition, including her grandparents.

But she acknowledged her experience is highly unusual for transgender people. Often they are met with resistance once they decide to come out regarding their identity.

Gender reassignment at a young age had some benefits, she said. Since she wasn't fully developed as a male, the hormone treatments helped shift her voice and physical body toward a more feminine appearance.

Sellers, who identifies as heterosexual, hasn't discussed her transgender past openly in her professional life until now. "It's just a part of who I am. There wasn't a reason to bring it up," she said.

The center is her first job in the LGBT community. She's excited about the opportunity to pull together her professional life and personal life. "It's my chance to really make a difference."

DeFrank center hires Trans Woman as Director.
By Troy May

(Originally published by Bay Area Reporter (Vol. 36 / No. 10 / 9 March 2006) Copyright © 2005 Bay Area Reporter, a division of Benro Enterprises, Inc).

The new director of the LGBT community center in San Jose, Aejaie Sellers, has a history of growing nonprofit community organizations and she's likely made history as the first transgender person in the country to lead an LGBT community center.

Sellers was hired in late February as the new executive director of the Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center. She started on February 27.

For two decades, she has been working in the nonprofit arena helping others while keeping her private life very private. That has changed with her new job.

"This job offered me an opportunity to bring my personal life and professional life together," said Sellers, who is 41. "It's like a coming out party."

She has 12 years of experience in areas such as strategic planning, financial management, program development and implementation, fundraising and grant writing, and nonprofit governance. Most recently, she served as the executive director for the Court Appointed Special Advocate office in Monterey.

During her three years at CASA, she increased the agency's capacity by doubling the number of child advocates and expanding the annual budget from $150,000 to $500,000. Sellers also secured new private, state, and federal grants of more than $1 million. Under her watch, CASA received the 2004 and 2005 Monterey Bay Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Award for Outstanding Nonprofit.

Sellers received the 2005 Child Abuse Prevention Council Award for Outstanding Professionalism, Leadership and Commitment.

"She had the set of skills we were looking for: leadership, management, and fundraising," said Eileen Kopp, president of the board of directors at the DeFrank center. "We also wanted someone who could reach out and involve various communities served by the center and to our allies as well. She is energetic and has great people skills."

The DeFrank center has an annual budget of $650,000; Sellers's annual salary is $70,000.

Until now, Sellers hasn't talked about being a transgender person in her professional life. As director of the DeFrank center, she has an opportunity to feel safe while talking about her past.

"This is the first time in a job that I've revealed that personal side of my life," she said.

Sellers said that she doesn't fit into the typical category for a leadership role in the gay community. She isn't gay, lesbian, or bisexual. She's a heterosexual woman who has a male partner. And she has a big vision for the DeFrank center, which serves the 10th largest city in the United States.

The center celebrates its 25th anniversary this year and has 21,000 visitors a year in its new 11,000 square-foot facility that opened two years ago.

"Many Faces, One Community," is the theme of the center's 25th anniversary celebration. "Aejaie's experiences as a transgender person will be invaluable in helping us create and provide dynamic programming and support that is inclusive of all members of the LGBT community," said Kopp.

The center will hold a fundraising event on Saturday, April 29, at the Fairmont Hotel in downtown San Jose, to celebrate its anniversary.

Sellers's experience as a transgender woman adds a rare element of experience, but it wasn't the reason she was hired. "Aejaie was hired because of her skills and abilities to manage and grow a nonprofit," said Clark Williams, interim executive director of the center and nonprofit management consultant.

"She told us she was transgender, but that didn't play a role in her hiring," Williams added. "With that said, I couldn't help but be moved by the symbolism of Aejaie." Center leaders said they don't know of any large LGBT community center in the country that has a transgender director, so Sellers could be the first.

Sellers wants to build on the center's momentum. In her first 90 days, she'll develop a long-term plan to increase funding, create broad awareness, and build relationships with businesses in Silicon Valley.

A day before her first day on the job, Sellers was already quoted in the San Jose Mercury News about a gay rights issue in the South Bay city of Los Altos. "We will be a bold voice in the community," she said.

She wants to make sure the center has programs for people of all ages, colors, backgrounds, and beliefs. "We need to find out what the gay and lesbian community really wants or needs from us. Then there is the bisexual community, which doesn't have any program that I know of."

The center started its search for a new director when Patrick Soricone left the position last November. After three years at the center, he accepted a position as the director of community impact at the United Way Silicon Valley.

Before moving to California, Sellers founded and served as the executive director for Transitional Services for Youth & Families in Burlington, Vermont. During her six-year tenure, Sellers expanded the organization from a start-up to an organization with a $600,000 budget.

She secured $1.5 million in both public and private funding for the Vermont nonprofit and expanded the reach of the organization by partnering with various local, regional and state agencies.

Ms. Aejaie Sellers' incredible personal achievement is a monumental example of the world-shaking benefits of positive thinking.  - Mrs. KAREN SERENITY
