Life
is a series of chapters...
Some chapters are meant to be read aloud in public while some are meant to be read silently in solitude. These differences do not mean any particular chapter has more inherent meaning or worth; it simply means that life is a constant ebb and flow; and thus, to be experienced fully, our interactions must change accordingly. Please enjoy my public chapters.
Some of you will recognize
that this is the third generation posting of my website. Welcome back! It’s
hard to believe, but my original website had it’s beginning as far back
as 1996. A lot has happened since then!
For those of you who are new, here’s a little about me:
First of all, the primary reason this website exists at all, is that I am a
post-operative transsexual woman. Without that seemingly slight bit of difference
my thoughts, experiences, and pictures would be of interest to only a very small,
select few friends and family. Unfortunately, due to the constraints our current
society continues to place on those of us who have different life experiences,
the need still exists for these pages of education and encouragement.

Unlike when I began my struggle with gender identity disorder nearly a decade
ago, there are now many helpful websites that are written and maintained by
others with similar transgender experiences. I will be re-establishing my links
to those pages in the very near future. I will also be updating this website
as my time and writing skills allow.
Thank you for your past and continued support...Alexus.

Jessica Clark, longtime Castro retail employee, dies.
by Cynthia Laird (Bay Area Reporter)
Jessica Clark, an employee
of the former Skin Zone store in the Castro, was found dead in her San Francisco
apartment Saturday, December 9th, 2006. She was 62. The San Francisco
Medical Examiner's office has performed an autopsy, but a spokesman said
Tuesday that the cause of death has not been determined. Friends and former
colleagues said that Ms. Clark was diabetic.
Andy Schwartz, who employed Ms. Clark at the Skin
Zone for several years, said that she would be missed. "I miss
her already," he said. "She was incredibly duteous and devoted
to her job."
Schwartz had to let Ms. Clark go when he closed the Skin Zone last December,
and began selling products online. Since then, she struggled to find work,
said Peter Isgro,
who had hired her to work in his antique store on Sacramento Street.
"Jessica had 25 years experience in retail and couldn't get a job,"
Isgro said. "In liberal San Francisco, she couldn't get a job outside
the Castro."
According to Isgro, Ms. Clark used to work at and later owned a dry cleaning
business in the Castro, and then worked at a liquor store for many years before
working at the Skin Zone. Ms. Clark was transsexual, and Schwartz said that
she transitioned on her own, apparently without family support or health insurance.
"She was devoted to that task and completed the process," he said.
Ms. Clark's friend Cloud Galanes-Rosenbaum was one of the people who found
her body last weekend. After friends couldn't reach her for several days,
Isgro and others figured out where she lived. Galanes-Rosenbaum and Alex Goldenberg
went to her apartment. When no one answered the door, the manager opened it,
and Ms. Clark's body was found on her bed, Galanes-Rosenbaum said.

Memorial at Castro & 18th Street marking the sad news of Jessica Clark's passing, a "former" transsexual woman
who worked in the Castro district of San Francisco for many years, most recently at Skin Zone until it closed.
"No one could reach her for four or five days," said Galanes-Rosenbaum.
"We grew concerned." "She really had a way of spotting
the slightest sadness in a person and would want to make a person feel better,"
Goldenberg said. "She called herself the 'Mother of Castro Street' and
was very nurturing to everyone."
Galanes-Rosenbaum pointed out that Ms. Clark was "sainted" by the
Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. A Bay Area Reporter article in January about
the closure of the Skin Zone noted Ms. Clark was named the "Patron Saint
of Gender Identity," and Galanes-Rosenbaum said that Ms. Clark was given
the formal name "Saint Mariposa Ambrosia."
Neil Jacob Rosenbaum, an attorney and longtime friend of Ms. Clark's, said
that he has been in contact with some of Ms. Clark's family members. Rosenbaum,
the father of Galanes-Rosenbaum, said he had known Ms. Clark for two decades,
since she managed the dry cleaning business.
"She was at the house for Thanksgiving," Rosenbaum said. "She
was the kindest, warmest person in the world," Isgro said.
Ms. Clark was born in Ohio and worked as popular, top-rated radio disc jockey, "Larry Clark" in Cincinnati at WSAI AM-1360. Clark also worked at WZYQ (Frederick, Maryland), KQV AM-1410 (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), WEEP AM-1080 (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) and WMZQ 98.7 FM in Washington D.C.
Clark had been married and had two children, although their whereabouts are unknown, friends said. An informal memorial was held on Friday, December 15, 2006 at 8 p.m. PST at 18th and Castro streets. Donations for a memorial fund for her can be made to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, 584 Castro Street, PMB 392, San Francisco, California 94114.
Beauty on the Edge - By Jen Millis
(excerpts from Gay & Lesbian Times, Issue #864, July 15th, 2004)
Jessica
Clark, a San Francisco transsexual who works at Skin Zone, a favorite beauty
outlet in the Castro district, is now happily experiencing girlhood adolescence
at age 50, but called her transition process and years of hormone therapy
a “gender nightmare.” Although born a man, she identifies completely
as a woman and a lesbian and does not see herself as transgender.
“I was embarrassed by the fact that I was not complete,” she says. Clark says that when she called her mom before her potentially life-threatening bottom surgery two years ago, her mom asked if this was truly what she wanted. She says she replied, “Mom, it’s not a question of what I want, it is a question of what I need to be complete.”
Clark knows so much about beauty and poise that she should start her own Miss Manners school. She celebrates her birthday on the day of her surgery, instead of the day of her birth, because that was the most important day of her life. Clark considers herself trangender, but evolving, “a stage one passes through.” She started hormone therapy more than 10 years ago at Johns Hopkins gender clinic in Baltimore.
Years
of taking estrogen and progesterone have left her almost hairless –
she shaves her legs once a week. She chose not to have top surgery because
she doesn’t want to risk losing sensation in her nipples and wants to
experience her own breasts, but over the years she’s grown to an A cup.
“Be natural,” is Clark’s beauty advice. “Look like
you ‘belong’ where you are.”
Clark
remembers the first time she went out to the theater wearing a dress. As
she was walking through the parking lot to the theater, a man ran past her
and chivalrously opened the door. “That was so exciting because,”
Clark says, “it meant I was being accepted. I don’t like the word
‘passing’ because it’s like an act, it’s cosmetic,
as if you’re putting on a mask. Being accepted is a much more accurate
term, because you’re not ‘passing’ as anything. …
If someone opens a door for you or offers you a seat on the bus, take it
as a high compliment and respond as gracefully and tactfully as any woman
would in that situation.”
The true beauty of the GLBT community is its celebration of differences. The transformation process is less about becoming someone or something else and more about individuals within the community transforming into their true selves. When it comes to gender and transitioning, we have our old-school drag queens, femmes and butches to thank for enabling people to express themselves more authentically today. They were the fashion rebels of the time who set the stage for today’s gender revolution. The gender and fashion variations in the GLBT community are signs of cultural self-development – the lack of fulfillment of decades past, finally getting its needs met.

As early as 12 years of age, I was deeply fascinated and totally smitten by radio and television broadcasting. Growing up as a teenager in the Midwestern USA during the late 1960's and being fortunate to reside within walking distance of three local radio stations, I had the pleasure of personally knowing and assisting"Larry Clark the DJ" at "Cincinnati's Number One Radio Station" WSAI-AM 1360, attracting a whopping 43% of the total age 12+ metro listening audience. Some of my many memories include traveling to Cincinnati's Lunken Airport in the WSAI-1360 "Roving Rocket" Ford Fairlane station wagon to meet, greet and pickup "The Monkees" who were appearing locally in concert; also "Larry" sharing the story of his first broadcasting job as a parking lot attendant at the old WCPO-Television Channel 9 studios on Symmes Street in Cincinnati, Ohio. (Serendipitously, a year later at age 17, I was hired by the same CBS network television station).
|
In an industry famous for producing large egos, "Larry Clark" was one of the kindest, most sensitive broadcast announcers that I've ever met. Even though my intuition suggested "Larry" might be Transsexual, in the late 1960's it was never openly discussed by anyone. As the decades passed, we both moved on in our industry and lost track of each other. Who would have ever thought we both would go through our own same but separate, challenging life transitions. Me (Karen Serenity) in Cincinnati, Ohio and "Jessica Clark" in San Francisco, California. I deeply miss my old friend Jessica. She remains in my loving thoughts and prayerful meditations. It's my fervent hope that Jessica Clark's formidable life story continues inspiring, reaching the precise souls it will lovingly touch and enlighten. May God always bless and comfort her. - Mrs. KAREN SERENITY

Maddie Deutsch, M.D. - West Hollywood, California USA
"Inclusive, empathetic, non-judgmental primary and preventive care for all adults."
Hi! Welcome to my practice.
I graduated with honors from the Chicago Medical School in 2001. After internship
and residency at Harbor-UCLA, I earned board certification in emergency medicine
and still practice in several Los Angeles area emergency departments. I also
hold a Clinical Attending position at the UCLA School of Medicine.
Practicing in the emergency departments of Los Angeles, I began to realize
that a large percentage of people have little or no access to quality, reliable,
empathetic and open-minded primary care. Soon I decided to open my own private
practice in order to serve segments of the population that may feel less than
comfortable in traditional primary care settings.
As a male to female transsexual, I am especially familiar with challenges
and struggles of people who do not fit society’s molds. Members of the
transgender, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and intersexed communities receive supportive
and empathetic care. Members of alternative lifestyle communities can feel
comfortable discussing their private lives and intimate practices without
fear of judgment or invalidation. And, of course, anyone from any walk of
life is welcome!
In my free time I can usually be found on my bicycle, producing music in my
recording studio or out seeing live music, independent films or art exhibits.
I frequently travel near and far and look forward to my winter ski trips!

My Philosophy
Harm reduction – This is a philosophy that accepts certain behaviors or conditions and attempts to encourage the safest courses of action that still allow these behaviors or conditions to exist. For example, while there are risks associated with cross-gender hormone therapy, there are often greater risks when this therapy is withheld, such as severe emotional distress. Some patients may turn to less than safe avenues such as self-management via an overseas mail order pharmacy. The safest, most harm-reducing method is to accept that transgendered patients at times require hormone therapy and provide these patients with proper medical supervision.
Another example might
be someone who enjoys multiple body piercing's. Some physicians may simply
make judgment on the patient’s lifestyle and tell them not to pierce.
This leads to emotional upset and feelings of invalidation. The patient will
probably continue to pierce but may feel uneasy about seeing their doctor
should a complication arise. Harm reduction argues that if the physician understands
and accepts this behavior and then agrees to help guide the patient, the patient
will be much healthier (and happier!)
Self-directed care – In the old days, doctors told patients what to
do and the patients listened. In the modern, internet-enabled era patients
are often well-informed and at times more informed than their physicians on
some topics. Often there is more than one way to approach a medical problem.
Patients may have questions and deserve to have them answered in a non-judgmental
way. Some patients may want to hear about alternative or non-western treatment
options. Others may want to hear the pros and cons of several different approaches
and make decisions for themselves or after discussion with friends or family,
or perhaps conduct their own research. I can even help teach you how to do
this research on your own. Still other patients may say, “Well Dr. Maddie,
I just don’t know – you decide for me”.
Nutrition, lifestyle and preventive health – Americans are getting less
and less healthy. Allergies and infections are up, energy and activity levels
are down. Without being judgmental or dictatorial, I’d like to help
my patients understand the links between overall health, nutrition, the glycemic
index, diabetes, activity level, vitamins, weight and emotional well being.
While living a life based around organic produce and daily exercise is not
for everyone, you’d be amazed at some little things you can do to make
big differences in your life.
Transgender care – I believe that transgendered patients on hormone
therapy should have a solid understanding of what they can expect and knowledge
about the various treatments they are receiving. They should understand the
pros and cons of issues such as cycling, the use of progesterone or Androcur,
oral vs. injectable vs. transdermal medication as well as the risks (and benefits)
of hormone therapy in both the short and long term. Furthermore, transgender
medical care does not end with hormone prescriptions. Preventive care, focus
on diet and weight management, cholesterol, preventive health and screening,
as well as holistic and emotional wellness and all other health issues that
are relevant to non-transgendered people are all cornerstones of a successful
comprehensive care plan, FTM or MTF.
The "De-medicalization" and "De-profitization" of cross
gender hormone therapy - Some physicians require that patients return for
weekly injections, and charge a fee for each visit. Some physicians refuse
to prescribe hormones or even disclose to their patients exactly what hormones
are being administered. Transgender care has become big business. No one should
profit unfairly from the treatment of transgendered people or anyone else
for that matter. I constantly wonder, "Why is transgender care so 'medicalized'?"
Diabetics inject themselves
several times a day with insulin, frequently adjusting the dose on their own
after becoming educated about their condition. Without insulin, some diabetics
could literally die within days. My own grandmother gives herself weekly vitamin
B12 shots for her severe anemia. So it is puzzling as to why a healthy, young
transperson can not be educated about their therapy and inject themselves,
only coming to the office for periodic checkups and adjustments as needed.
Preserving the reproductive future of transgendered patients - I firmly believe
that prior to beginning cross gender hormone therapy, all patients should
receive counseling regarding therapy's effects on their reproductive future,
and steps that can be taken to preserve that future. Typically this involves
cryopreservation (sperm or egg banking). I will discuss these matters with
you prior to beginning your therapy so that you may make informed decisions
about your reproductive future.
The WPATH/HBIGDA Transgender Standards of Care - These are guidelines. They
are well written, relevant and in many cases appropriate. However, as with
everything else in life, nothing is cutand dry. I subscribe to the Standards
of Care and respect their importance. That said I am comfortable deviating
from the standards of care if circumstances support doing so.
About My Practice
Services offered –
Routine physical examinations (pre-employment, school, yearly, etc)
Periodic preventive health visits (pap smears, EKG, blood pressure and cholesterol
screening, immunizations such as flu or hepatitis)
Routine office visits (sore throat, bladder or yeast infection)
Cross gender hormone therapy supervision, including injection of hormones
if a patient does not wish to inject themselves at home.
Short term facial anesthesia injections for electrolysis or laser hair removal
sessions (call me for more information)
Travel medicine consultations.
A doctor to call with those nagging questions that come up from time to time!
Remember, I am YOUR doctor.
What can be expected at an office visit? – I believe in a hands-on
approach. I work alone and have no office staff. I will take your blood pressure,
pulse and other vital signs and then take a medical history and perform a
physical examination. This may take just a few minutes or last up to an hour,
depending on the problem(s) and whether or not you are a new patient or have
seen me before. We will discuss your concerns and come up with a plan we
both agree upon. You are welcome to bring a family member or friend to your
appointment. Appointments are usually scheduled via the internet (coming
soon - for now, just call or e-mail).
What about insurance? – Not at this time. Participation in insurance
plans leads to rushed doctors who may feel constrained in their practices.
Insurance billing leads to higher overhead costs and requires office staff
and/or a contract with a billing company. I accept cash or credit cards and
will provide you with documentation (including a copy of your medical record,
if needed) which can be submitted to your insurance company for reimbursement.
What are the costs? – I like to keep things simple. There is no “cafeteria
style” fee schedule. Your time with me is based just on that –
time. We will schedule an appointment time block appropriate for the problem
at hand. There are four basic types of office visits. There may be extra
charges for medications or immunizations, and costs do not include lab or
x-ray services (provided through Cedars-Sinai Medical Center). Call or e-mail
for exact rates.
1) Simple (ex. – established patient with a cough) 15 minutes.
2) Expanded (ex. – established patient requiring readjustment of medications
or review of abnormal lab tests, or a yearly physical for an established
patient) 20 minutes.
3) New patient (complete history and physical) 30 minutes.
4) New patient, complex (ex. – any transgendered patients beginning
hormone therapy, or a new patient with multiple medical problems) 1 hour.
Office Hours - My office hours vary; Generally one or two afternoons or evenings
a week. Stay tuned for web-based self scheduling. In the meantime, call or
e-mail me to make an appointment.
Directions
and office info - Our office phone number is 323-219-2469. We are located
at 8350 Santa Monica Blvd., Suite 104, in central West Hollywood, California
90069 near City Hall and Gelson’s Market. A public city lot across
the street allows 2 hours of free parking.

Dr. Mekah Gordon - Santa Fe, New Mexico USA
"Educator, Writer, Consultant, Designer with sensitivity, understanding and respect."
Mekah Gordon as
a Transgender activist and advocate, has achieved remarkable precedence in
New York state and continues in her home state of New Mexico. Recently she
was chosen as a "Commitment to Care Award Winner," from the
Alliance for Gender Awareness, Inc. in New Jersey. Mekah's reputation as
a tenacious, passionate, generous, and vigorous Transgender Educator and
Consultant throughout the United States is exemplary.
As the Santa Fe, New Mexico Regional Editor
for The Normal Heart Newspaper, she currently writes a column, titled, "Transitionally Speaking."
Subjects range from current and/or personal Transgender issues, to political
controversies, specifically related to the GLBTGQI community. Mekah is a
male-to-female Transsexual Activist and Advocate and founder of the S.
U. R. E. Foundation® (Sensitivity, Understanding, Respect, through
Education), in addition to the Santa
Fe Transgender Support Group®, in New Mexico.
The S. U. R. E. Foundation's
focus is working with doctors, nurses, health care workers, police departments,
prisons, work environments, peer relations, parents, (maintaining a foundation
of unconditional love) relatives, and friends of gender questioning children
and/or adults.
The S. U. R. E. Foundation® is planning, in the near future, of setting
up an educational tax-exempt 501c(3) trust fund, for those in the trans community,
who have met all requirements for GCS (gender corrective surgery©), yet
cannot afford the expense for this procedure. By paving the way for others
who wish to Transition while maintaining their employment, has been a continuous
major part of her passionate Educational endeavors as the founder/director
of the S. U. R. E. Foundation®.
Applicants would be interviewed and their applications reviewed by a board of directors. After a very thorough evaluation, a grant would be issued to cover some or all of the expenses. Mekah Gordon is available as a consultant in addition to being a Lecturer and Keynote Speaker concerning her expertise in the area of transgender issues. She had taught in New York State a total of 26 years as a "male," before coming out to her school districts superintendent, in the summer of 2000, of her plans to transition from male-to-female.
Mekah, was the first Transsexual teacher in New York State, and probably the entire nation, to ever maintain her teaching position in a school district where she was about to transition from male-to-female, receiving a year off with pay, while also maintaining her health benefits, enabling her to begin full time transition.
This alone was unheard
of and historically precedent setting, throughout the entire United States
She's been featured on network television's, "The Early Show" with
Katie Couric, "The View" with Barbara Walters, in numerous national
and overseas newspaper articles, as well as a variety of radio stations throughout
the United States. On January 26th, 2007, at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in West
