Every day when first waking up in the morning I always warmly thank The Universe for all the many blessings in my current life.

I give thanks for my good health, the ability to walk and function daily without pain, to see and hear, my home for providing me shelter, my dear loving husband of 17 years and going strong, my wonderful life enhancing career, my younger sister, loving parents, and all my dear, cherished friends - - both near and far.

At lunchtime in my office I often stop, quiet my mind and give thanks for being fully alive, participating here and now, on this beautiful, marvelously astonishing, planet Earth. I get goose bumps thinking about life's wonderful magic, mystery and why I showed up on the planet at this particular time and place.

On clear evenings I often take a long leisurely walk under the stars, once again thanking The Universe for bringing me all the people, opportunities and experiences that make life such a glorious adventure.

What I've noticed over the years is that when one takes the time to stop and truly express Gratitude for everything in one's life, The Universe responds most favorably. Life suddenly fills with more Love, Happiness, better Health, more Abundance, Creativity and a new, refreshing attitude about people and situations.

Believe it or not, this is how our lives were meant to lived. The Universe is a generous, prosperous, abundant giver. It responds quite favorably to our expressing appreciation. It's important to realize that there are no accidents or coincidences in our absolutely perfect, intelligent Universe.

Every event, situation, and person in our lives have something special and unique to teach us. Which is why we need to express Gratitude for everything that happens to us in our daily lives.

We also need to be Grateful for the lessons in our lives - - the good and the challenging. We don't learn too much from the easy stuff. We need not run from our sometimes painful life lessons.

Consider them little, enlightening, wondrous gifts from The Universe. As we learn from these experiences our lives will positively change and dramatically improve. We are the sum total of all our choices up to this moment.

Let us take life off autopilot and take time to give Gratitude for everything in our lives. Step out of that busy schedule for a moment and reclaim inner peace of being. Take a deep breath, relax, be Grateful and let the stress melt away.

Start each day with healing, loving, and accepting thoughts of Gratitude. Advance confidently in the direction of your dreams to live the fulfilling life that you have imagined. This is the path to joy, abundance, enlightenment, and serenity.

As a child, I often would go out in my Midwestern backyard on a clear night, lay down on the soft summer grass and look straight up at the night sky's spectacular stellar light show. I always wondered where did I come from? Why was I here? What was my life's purpose?

Now as an adult woman, on clear evenings I often take a long leisurely walk under the stars, once again staring up in sheer awe at the Universal star filled night sky, asking myself the same mysterious questions that have puzzled humanity since the beginning of time. I'm sure many of you have had similar experiences as you were growing up, extending into your current adult life.

What in the heck are all those twinkling nighttime stars. Is that bright star over there, a planet, satellite, galaxy, constellation, or maybe a UFO? Did you know that cuddling and hugging can assist in lowering your blood pressure and reducing stress in your life?

Over the years there have been many investigations on this fascinating topic, including a recently published study in The Journal Psychosomatic Medicine, which reveals that a heartwarming pause and a cuddle can actually suppress stress related hormones, releasing oxytocin, a human hormone associated with maternal love.

My dear spiritual and life mentor, Dr. Leo Buscaglia, nicknamed the "Love Doctor" by some because of his legendary "Love Class" at UCLA, in the 1970's and 80's, always talked, taught and lectured about the healthy benefits of good, functional, sharing relationships, the pure joys and healing ecstasy of hugging.

I often attribute and give Leo Buscaglia, Ph.D. much of the credit for teaching me about the true value and benefits of finding and being in my current growth oriented, loving, mutually rewarding relationship. Dear sweet, lovable Leo taught me that relationships and intimacy are absolutely essential to one's mental, physical and spiritual health. The alternatives to which are loneliness, despair, isolation, and self esteem loss. Why do so many us select those as alternatives when we can select joy?

Loneliness is reportedly the major malaise of our time. Fear of taking risks contributes to keeping us lonely. Many of us are afraid to tell people who we really are and we often remain alone. What a magical wonder to fully share ourselves with another understanding, accepting person.

Dr. Dean Ornish, a Harvard trained medical doctor and cardiologist, revealed that the real epidemic in modern culture is not only physical heart disease but lack of loving, supporting relationships and nurturing intimacy. Dr. Ornish reported in the late 1990's, "no factor in medicine, not diet, not drugs, not exercise, not smoking, not surgery, not even genetics...no other factor has a more powerful effect on our health and premature death and disease from virtually all causes as the healing power of loving relationships and intimacy."

Ornish demonstrates in his book "Love and Survival" that personal intimacy and other aspects of emotional well-being all the elements that make up what we call "love", are as important to our physical condition as to our mental health. They have a powerful direct effect on our bodies, giving us stronger immune systems, better cardiovascular functioning and longer life expectancies. The benefits of opening our hearts to others go beyond curing our bodies of disease, it's also the first step toward healing our entire lives.

My loving husband and I love to cuddle, kiss, hug, and give each other long back rubs. I'm so deeply grateful for his loving, compassionate presence in my life. We've happily lived, loved, laughed and shared together for over 17 years and it still seems as though we just met last week.

"Former" TS Women Establishing Romantic, Functional, Hetero Relationships.

It has been often asked over the years if I'm aware of or have I ever met any former TS women who are in functional, sharing, loving, long term relationships with men. For the sake of discussion in this article, I'll be writing about hetero relationships since that is my viewpoint and has been gleaned from my own life experiences in dating the opposite sex (men).

When I first started my life transition back in 1982, I was in my early 30's and there weren't too many transsexual women role models.

Back then, the only real form of communication was Phoebe Smith's "Transsexual Voice" newsletter which was distributed to the world via snail mail from of her small home in Atlanta, Georgia. It was through Phoebe's informative, up-to-date newsletter that many of us first established communications with other successful, happy, affirmatively adjusted women who were in long term relationships with a man. Many of whom were legally married to a man. Reading these successful life stories inspired me greatly, causing my mind to excitedly fly, providing much hope and optimism.

I learned much from these long term, post transitioned women, exchanging letters, phone calls and talking in person. It was from these early contacts that I truly started to believe that my life long goal of one day meeting a nice man and getting married just might be possible for me.

One of the first important things I learned was that the vast majority of these long term post transition women, who were successfully living in fully functional relationships with men were living their lives in the so called "deep stealth" or "invisibly woodworked" mode. Yes, this is indeed possible as I have witnessed it firsthand among many successfully transitioned, emotionally available, confident women.

To my total surprise and shock at the time, many of the boyfriends and/or husbands of these post transitioned women seemed to be clueless to their wives' pasts. Some of these women had "disclosed" to their boyfriends early on in their relationships, while other women waited until their guys got to know them better just as a "regular" woman.

Stealthy Disclosure

I still get asked the question, should I "disclose" early or late in the relationship or keep quiet about the past as long as possible?

From what I've read and seen over my 25 year life as Karen, there really doesn't seem to be a totally "correct" answer. In my own life, I shared my past with some of the men I dated while not telling others. I revealed my past to my now husband after we had dated about 14 months.

Many Emails I often receive still revolve around the question how in the world does a post-transitioned woman go about meeting a nice man to date and "accept her?"

Nurishing relationships are essential for most females and are one of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of human life. We shouldn't concern ourselves too much with our surrounding population, our weight, age or whether future mates are aware of our "history." Love blossoms everywhere and is abundantly ubiquitous.

The secret is to remain as positive as possible. Human relationships are the most challenging dyad in the relative world. Conversely, human relationships also offer the greatest potential for tremendous amounts of spiritual growth. We grow one way when we're alone. And in a much more dynamic manner when involved in a relationship with another person. Relationships can bring out many long hidden feelings in both persons and are your surest sign of healthy change and sharing expansion.

If I may, I would like to suggest a few methods that have helped me and may assist you in your heartfelt search for a loving, functional, nurturing, nourishing, sharing relationship.

We need not worry about our own inner feelings concerning a future stealth or non-stealth life path. Again, each of us must follow our own heart's directions. There's no right or wrong path. The "correct" path for each soul is the one that resonates the warmest inner feelings of comfort, peace, joy and yes...serenity.

First, please go out to people and date as many men as possible (the theory of large numbers). Even if you don't feel like going out with a particular man, please go out with him anyway. Trust me on this.

Second, having your own tastefully designed, small personal website can also help you connect to a future mate. I've know many gals who've met their future boyfriends and husbands in this precise manner. Of course, please use caution when sharing any of your personal info with someone new over the internet.

Third, please, please purchase a current copy of Playgirl Magazine. Better yet, please get a subscription. Looking through this magazine often will help you greatly on your romantic, relationship journey. Most importantly, fantasize, fantasize, fantasize. (Thank You, Dr. Ruth Westheimer!) Let your marvelous mind daydream of your future, special, accepting, understanding, sharing, loving mate.

Fourth, Imaging, Creative Visualization & Intention. Imagine how good you'll feel having your special guy sending you flowers after a date. Visualize sitting together on the couch, watching one of your favorite movies, as you both gently kiss and he tells you how much he thinks about you when he's away from you. Intend him telling you how good you feel in his arms. Imagine him telling you that he is so happy with you and that he loves you more each day. Visualize completely accepting him as the man he is today, as he accepts you for the woman you are today. Intend that he is a gentle, compassionate mate, lover, admiring companion and your best friend. Imagine sharing your love, mind, spirit and life with him, through the ages.

Fifth, try listing on some of the better quality online dating services (i.e. Match.com, eHarmony.com). Please use these personals singles listings responsibly, sensibly and carefully. Remember that meeting anyone for the first time, should be done with great caution. Be safe, always plan your initial meetings with new people in public places. Never agree to meet someone for the first time in a private or secluded environment. (An important rule that's helped me: Don't have intercourse for at least two months with any man you are dating).

Sixth, learn to play Golf. No kidding. I personally know many women, some in their 50's, who've met their future husbands while out on the course.

Seventh, if you're seeking a partner, follow your passion. You'll increase your odds and chances of meeting a compatible mate participating in an activity, interest or hobby you thoroughly enjoy.

Eighth, write or compose a complete description of your future kindred spirit or "special man." The more detailed the better. Read it each day upon waking or before bedtime. This powerful imaging process will reinforce your inner heart's desire and activate invisible forces around you, bringing you closer to your special soul mate with each passing day. Remember, whatever you're seeking...it's seeking you. Don't concern yourself too much with exactly how or when you'll meet your future mate. Trust the Universe has heard your intentions and is guaranteed to respond, for this is one of the laws of the relative Universe.

Ninth, please read the "Oprah" recommended book, "He's Just Not That Into You: The No-Excuses Truth to Understanding Guys" by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo. This revealing, enlightening book will save most women many heartaches and needless worry.

Tenth, keep in mind the Rule Among Girls: Always behave as though he is only one of several. You've just started. Give others time to respond. You are not a blouse on the mark-down rack. You are quality, designer stuff, and everyone won't be up scale enough to appreciate what you have to offer. Give them time to find you.

Eleventh, it's important to stay positive, optimistic, enthusiastic and upbeat. Always keep thinking about your relationship goal of finding that special soul who at this very moment is also searching and seeking you. Life is as good as you Think it is. Most people are as happy as they make up their minds to be. Always know that, whatever you're seeking, it's seeking you...you can indeed have it. The architect of the Universe did not guide us down the path we're currently on, leading us nowhere and into a life of aloneness. We are now prepared and ready to share our new joyful completeness with another. Please keep listening to your warm, directed, enthusiastic feelings. Your feelings about something is where your special truth will always be found.

Twelfth, give daily Gratitude and for all aspects of your life. The good and the painful. Expressing and giving daily gratitude for everything in life is like having a genie in a bottle. It will also help to greatly reduce, and assist us to forget the terrible pain, shame and guilt of our pasts, allowing us to lovingly merge into our present moment energies and creative awareness.

Don't listen to energy-draining, negative people who may give you a gazillion excuses for not being able to find a mate. Keep believing in yourself. Read daily your personally composed "My Special Man" description of your future guy. Think positively about your goal often. Soon it will be yours. In fact, it's yours the moment you write down your goal and have faith that you will soon have the loving, fulfilling, rewarding, compatible relationship you know you truly deserve.

Remember our precious lifetimes are completely on schedule and on purpose whether we're aware or not. Again, all we have to do is keep believing in ourselves. The rest will take care of itself. Keep seeking your greater purpose. Gratitude is always the key.

When we're ready to accept and share our beautiful hearts, we will meet the right soul for a fulfilling relationship beyond our wildest imaginings. Love is based first on developing the love of one's life within; rather than looking for the right person out there, it's becoming the right person.

Are there actually understanding, open-minded, sensitive, nurturing men out there who would gladly "accept" and cherish a woman like us? You bet there are!
